Attack of the Princesses!

Myself and my oldest son where promptly kicked out of the house last night as a steady stream of reagally dressed teen, pre-teen, and pint sized princesses arrived to celibrate my 8 year old daugther’s birthday. As the guy’s-night-out, we ate a ton chinesse food wne went to see The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising.
What is it that attracts our girls’ to the life of a Princess or our boys’ to the mission of a hero with magical powers meant to save the world? Is it cultural or is the desire to be special build into each of us by our Creator? He sees each of us as special, unique individuals, knowing the number of the hairs on our head. In the absence of the revelation that He sees us each as princes and princesses, sons and daughters of the King, heros and warriors in His service tasked with bringing light to a dark world, we attempt to fill that built-in need with dreams of Harry Potter and Cinderella.

Fedora Core 5 Screenshot

Now that I am fc5 enabled, here is a screenshot:

I don’t think I’ve seen other desktops with a left-side/bottom panel set up like mine, but I find it easier to cluster my most used panel function into one corner.

‘Nuff said…

I am 11% Idiot.
Friggin Genius

I am not annoying at all. In fact most people come to me for advice. Of course they annoy the hell out of me. But what can I do? I am smarter than most people.

Tinker-itis

I gave my 91Courtstreet WebGUI template tinker-itis so I’m taking it as a sign that I can play with some other tools. We needed an industrial strength wiki at work, so I gave WikiMedia a test drive. I liked it so much I bought… I mean I recommended it for work and left it as the front page to replace my broken WebGUI template. I’ve always liked wikis – especially the cognitive dissonance they encourage amoung leadership-types when told that the relinguishing of control over the quality of information can result in something other than anarchy.

New Family Member!

We are proud to anouce that we are the parents of new new, bouncing baby… beetle! I have plans to add a GreaseCar kit to burn pure veggetable oil, as well as look into home-made biodiesel. I’ve heard of petro-diesel mileage exceeding 240 mpg with this kit (That’s just the amount of diesel burned – doesn’t count the veggie oil). Imagine only pulling up to the pumps every three months or so…

Blog Spammed! Where is the mustard?

I just got blog spammed! I had to laugh, ’cause I’m pretty sure I make up about 50% of the readership of this blog, so posting ads here is a little like fishing in the desert… The downside is I’ll need to turn on moderation and such, so the hordes (sic) of legitimate commentors will have to work that much harder. (Hey, I’ve had three, count ’em three, comments to date!)

Happy Halloween!

Just sitting here on my front steps, handing out candy to the hordes of ghouls, ghosts, witches, faeries, and princesses. I’ve noted two small, but significant differences this year:
One is the number of firefighter costumes, it’s good that the firefighters and police officers have regained some of the respect in the hearts and minds of kids, where is had dwindled away over the years, being replaced by the products of the Hollywood-hype machine and WWF-like side shows.
The second thing is the comments I’ve gotten about my Bush/Cheney signs by kids. While they where evenly split, like “Bush, Boo!” and a “My dad’s voting for Bush!”, They were comments from kids. While I would normally enjoy seeing them take an interest in their leaders and the process of selecting those leaders, it’s seems many kids are coming away from kitchen tables of the neighborhood with only a disdain for one candidate or the other, without knowing any of the issues, or what distinguishes one from the other. Probably, not unlike their parents…
I guess the score is: Firemen, 1 – Politicians, 0.

Dodging the bullet

While our sysadmins run around trying to save the exchange server from yet another NetSky variant, I can’t help but gloat (just a little ;-) as I connect to out qmail server (we use both) with evolution and wonder what a virus looks like. While I know “pride goeth before the fall” and all that, It’s nice to know, at least this once, I made a good choice when I decided to back Linux. I’ve used Linux as my work, developement, and play desktop almost exclusively since ’98 and, for the most part, it hasn’t let me down. I haven’t alway been able to do all the things my counterparts in the Win32 world can do (et. la. shockwave, directx games) but they rarely can do what I take for granted (loopback file systems, open just about any disk format, tun/tap wizardry, use a real shell, etc, etc, etc…)

Testing 1, 2, 3

Trying to match my WebGUI theme to my MovableType theme is getting to be a bear…
